Mount Vernon to benefit from green funding boosts

Mount Vernon Community Hall has been awarded £1,000 funding for materials to create a community garden in an unused area beside Mount Vernon Community Hall.

The project is one of ten in Glasgow to benefit from over £8,450 total funding from the Central Scotland Green Network (CSGN) Community Project Fund to improve their local greenspace.

The £40,000 Community Project Fund – supported by £30,000 funding from the Greggs Foundation and £10,000 from Central Scotland Green Network Trust (CSGNT) – is providing one-off grants of up to £1,000 to support small-scale greenspace initiatives and to foster community engagement in maintaining and enhancing the local environment. The Fund aims to increase community use of local greenspace, particularly within disadvantaged communities, in order to positively impact on the quality of life for local residents.

Following a public consultation where the options of local residents were sought on the best use of the proposed space as well as its design and layout, the garden will be used by the community to grow food and as an educational area for a local playgroup. There will also be sustainable drainage, with rain water being captured and used to water the plants.

Keith Geddes, Chair of the Central Scotland Green Network Trust, said: “The standard of applications to this year’s fund was fantastic. Small-scale local initiatives are instrumental in achieving our goal of creating a high-quality green network across central Scotland to improve the quality of life for local communities.”

Mark Donohoe, Chair of the Board for Mount Vernon Community Hall, said: “we are absolutely delighted to receive this funding which will go a great way to helping our community realise its ambition of establishing a community garden for all to use and enjoy"

   October  2017   Action Earth

Mount Vernon Community Hall (MVCH) Volunteers is calling on everyone to lend a hand to improve their local environment, and get involved in their forthcoming Volunteering Matters Action Earth project.

MVCH volunteers will be holding a Community Engagement Day to help create our community garden and increase biodiversity within Mount Vernon Park on the 10th of September 2017 from 10am onwards

The activity is part of the Volunteering Matters Action Earth campaign which is supported by Scottish Natural Heritage.

Volunteering Matters Action Earth will be supporting around 170 projects in Scotland in 2017 with grant awards of up to £500. These grants are aimed at groups who support and encourage volunteer activity through practical environmental projects.

Mark Donohoe, who is Chairperson for the Mount Vernon Community Hall, wants to see as many people as possible come along to help their activity. .

“Everybody can get involved in their local outdoor spaces. They are a shared resource and a shared responsibility. From the smallest individual action to a national campaign, every contribution helps!  The Volunteering Matters Action Earth grants are designed to help groups of volunteers take practical action to improve and create places for wildlife.”
